About 700 indigent citizens of Anambra state have received food items ranging
from bags of rice, bags of beans, tubers of yams, beverages, toiletries and some others from the
Bishop of Awka Catholic Diocese His Lordship Most Revd. Dr. Paulinus Chukwuemeka Ezeokafor distributing the items at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Awka Bishop Ezeokafor urged Nigerians especially the less-privileged not to be disillusioned by the visiccitudes of life as no condition was permanent.
He said that the poor and the needy deserved compassion and help from not only
the church but also from government and other public-spirited individuals in
the society. The cleric also noted that the immediate past administration began
a welfare scheme for those above 70 years of age, he said such welfare scheme
should be extended to the jobless and the less-privileged in our midst .
Bishop Ezeokafor opined that social welfare packages was a function government
should execute to rid the society off vices resulting from unemployment and the
like adding that the establishment of skill acquisition centres and vocational
training centres where they would receive training for self-empowerment
purposes was critical .
Meanwhile the cleric also visited Regina Ceali mission hospital Awka where he interacted and prayed for the sick and wished them well this Easter
period and henceforth while urging them to keep fit as they would recover
sooner or later to join their families as the hospital was not a place of abode
for anyone .
