Some NSF members were said to be angry with their chairman, Senator Umaru Dahiru over allegations of misinformation and have called for his resignation. It was gathered yesterday that consequent upon intensive consultations from the Senate leadership, the chamber is set to approve Jonathan’s extension request. Checks by Daily Sun revealed that the chamber has till Wednesday afternoon to approve or reject the emergency rule extension.
Last week, shortly after Jonathan’s extension request, the NSF met to review the matter and its chairman was mandated to brief the media on the forum’s stand.
Senator Dahiru had announced last Wednesday that the NSF was opposed to the extension of emergency rule in the three states.
A senator present at the meeting said that, “at no time did the NSF agree that the chairman should announce our opposition to the extension. He’s alone because the meeting didn’t reach that conclusion.
“There was no time during the meeting that we rejected the emergency rule extension.”
The tone allegedly changed after the service chiefs briefed lawmakers in a closed-session last Thursday, where it was agreed that the extension request would be granted but with certain measures put in place.
Recall that the House of Representatives approved the extension less than 48 hours after the President’s request landed in the chamber. The request for extension of emergency rule in the three North eastern states was made after Boko Haram abducted 234 girls from their school in Chibok, Borno State, on April 14.
