Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has urged Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and other govenors, who were denied entry into Ekiti State for Governor Kayode Fayemi’s re-election rally on Thursday to seek redress in court.
Other governors, who were also said to have been prevented from entering Ekiti State on Thursday, were Governors Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State and Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State.
The governors, including Fayemi, who is seeking a second term in office in Saturday’s governorship election, are all of the All Progressives Congress.
Falana, while speaking with our correspondent on Friday, urged the governors to urgently seek a legal redress in court so that innocent citizens were not charged with terrorism offences.
His suggestion was against the backdrop of the terrorism charges instituted against some loyalists of Fayemi, including a commissioner in the state, Mr. Funminiyi Afuye, after the police allegedly attacked the convoy of the governor on June 8.
Falana said, “Therefore, the state governors, whose movement has been restricted in recent time, should not hesitate to approach the relevant high courts to ask for a perpetual injunction to restrain the Federal Government and its agencies from further abusing their right to freedom of movement.
“The increasing partisan role of the security forces in the country should be redefined by all stakeholders in the collective interest of the Nigerian people. Otherwise, many innocent Nigerians stand the risk of being maliciously prosecuted on trumped-up charges of terrorism by the Federal Government.”
