Senator Andy Uba is currently representing the senatorial district. Mrs. Ojukwu, who spoke from Madrid, Spain yesterday, said it had never crossed her mind to contest for the senatorial seat as highly speculated in Anambra.
As the matriarch of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), she said there was a very big role for her to play to ensure that the party overcame and survived all the challenges facing it.
She pointed out that if the rumour were true, she would have resigned her appointment before October 1, saying the speculation was the handiwork of those out to cause confusion in Anambra.
“I have heard about this, but I thought it was a joke from the person who called me, but now you are making this inquiry. Let me categorically say here that there has never been any point in time I had interest to contest the senatorial election.
“My preoccupation now as the matriarch of our party is to ensure that APGA is up and running; to continue to help the other party leaders to ensure that our party remains very strong, strategic and dynamic,” she said.
She was hopeful that APGA would make a good showing in the general elections in 2015, particularly in the South-East states, where the people, she said, still loved and revered her late husband, Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
Asked whether she was aware of reports that former Anambra governor, Chief Peter Obi was defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), she dismissed it, saying Obi had promised Ojukwu that he would always remain in APGA.
According to her, the former governor had assured Ojukwu that he would remain to continue to build and sustain APGA as the pride of the Igbo.
Obi, she said, could not afford to renege on his alleged promise, knowing well the role Ojukwu played to ensure he returned to Awka Government House for a second term.
Mrs. Ojukwu lauded her party’s decision to support President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election, saying the Jonathan presidency had been very rewarding to Ndigbo.
She also said she was impressed by what Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano had achieved since stepping into the saddle, particularly in fighting crime in the state.
