KILLING OF ANAMBRA VARSITY STUDENT BY VIGILANCE: ANAMBRA POLICE CALLS FOR CALM

Anambra state police command has decried the taking of laws into their hands by Students of Anambra State University, Igbariam campus, weekend when they protested alleged killing of one of their students in final year by the vigilance group.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer Uche Ezeh made available to Odogwu Media he warned against taking of laws into ones hands and the destruction of property worth millions but added that police had made some arrests and are still investigating he incident.
He appealed for calm as police is on top of the situation and would arrest all those concerned for interrogation and eventual prosecution even as the vigilance man that killed the student have been arrested.

It would be recalled that students of the University took to the major streets protesting the alleged shooting to death of one of their own, a final year undergraduate, (names withheld) by a vigilance operative in the area.

Trouble was said to have started between the deceased and the security operative over a misunderstanding which was not immediately ascertained.

As they were fighting, the student was said to have stabbed the security man on the process and in a bid to retaliate, the vigilance man shot him with his gun and he slumped.

The student was then rushed to a nearby hospital where he gave up the ghost on arrival.

When the news of the death of the student filtered into the ears of the co- students, they quickly mobilized into a mob and made straight to the house of the vigilance operative and set it on fire since they could not get him there.

An eyewitness said, "he was lucky that we did not get him in the house, it would have been one, one ".

But not appeased by the efforts so far the students moved to the the Igbariam junction/park , barricaded the roads there including the ever- busy Enugu/Awka/Onitsha expressway and made bonfire.

Property estimated into millions of naira were either looted or damaged on the process.

There was gridlock   for about two hours and some passengers were reportedly robbed as the melee lasted.

It took the intervention of 10 pick-up van load of armed policemen to disperse them.

Unconfirmed report hinted that the student allegedly may be a member of a cult group in the campus marked out to be arrested by the vigilance outfit before the incident.
