Nigeria Labour Council, (NLC) Anambra State Council, and
Trade Union Congress of Nigeria have joined their counterparts
nationwide to stage a peaceful rally to draw attention of political
authorities to the state of the country and damages corruption has
caused its development in totality.
Delivering the address signed by the National Presidents of
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and TUC, Comrades Ayuba Wabba, mni and
Bobboi Kaigama, the Anambra State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Jerry Nnubia
said the rally was a national discourse to drastically reduce the cost
of governance at all level against the background of the fall in the
price of crude oil and foreign revenue.
They called on Governor Willie Obiano to fashion out
modalities that would help his government to reduce the cost of
governance from the state to local government area level as President
Muhammadu Buhari, who upon assumption of office mandated Revenue
Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), to do a
comprehensive downward review of salaries and allowances of elected and
appointed public officers.
According to the organised labour, 'Anambra State executive
and legislative arms of government should work towards establishment of
‘Anti-corruption courts’ to try corruption cases in the State as
that would give a renewed impetus to the fight against corruption, as
well as to review and strengthen anti-corruption legislations with a
view to removing loopholes in anti graft war.'
They also enjoined the state government to support them in
advocating for extension of anti-graft agencies, and anti-graft judges
at the state and local government level as provided for in the ICPC Act,
which would exclusively handle corruption related cases only.
Contributing, the state chairman of Trade Union Congress
(TUC), Comrade Okechukwu Ifeanyi stressed the need for all public
officers(elected and appointed) to publicly declare their assets and
liabilities upon assumption of office.
He enjoined the government to ensure that funds identified
to have been stolen from the common treasury was traced, recovered to
the last kobo and kept in a special account from where they would be
appropriated for job creation, funding educational infrastructure from
primary to tertiary institutions, and for upgrading health care
infrastructure.
For his part, the Anambra State Chairman of Radio,
Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU), Prince
Emeka Kalu, said corruption among workers would be reduced to a barest
minimum when employers learn to remunerate their employees promptly.
In a response, Governor Willie Obiano, represented by
Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solomon Chukwulobelu, pledged
to quickly intervene on their needs, even as he noted that his
administration had been championing their needs.
