WE NEVER TOOK N5BN BRIBE FROM JONATHAN —OHANAEZE

THE leadership of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo has denied receiving N5 billion as gratification to endorse President Goodluck Jonathan for the February 14 election.
Addressing a press conference in Enugu, on Friday, the President- General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Enwo Igariwey, said the allegation that they took bribe from the presidency was baseless.
Igariwey noted that the interest of Ndigbo would be more protected if President Jonathan was re-elected, adding that it was only Jonathan that would implement the report of the national conference that supported, among other things, the creation of nine states in each of the six geo-political zones in the country.
He added that it was Jonathan that would address the issue of imbalance in the political structure in the country.

12 YEARS AFTER, SLOK AIR FIGHTS BACK; SUES FG OVER REVOCATION OF LICENCE

Almost 11 years after the revocation of its operating licence, the management of Slok Air Nigeria Limited has dragged the Federal Government to court, demanding over N20 billion as damage for the illegal revocation.
The Chief Olusegun Obasanjo-led Federal Government had announced the revocation of Slok Air operating licence on March 12, 2004, just a year after the airline was licenced, without any tangible reason for the action.
Slok Air, which promised to feel the vacuum created by the non-existence of a national carrier for the country, was being promoted by the former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu.
The grounding of the promising airline was described as political, as it was largely attributed to the stern criticism coming from the ex-governor against the then leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Buhari vs Jonathan: Beyond the Election, by Charles Soludo

*Jonathan and Buhari
I need to preface this article with a few clarifications. I have taken a long sabbatical leave from partisan politics, and it is real fun watching the drama from the balcony.  Having had my own share of public service (I do not need a job from government), I now devote my time and energy in pursuit of other passions, especially abroad.

A few days ago, I read an article in Thisday entitled “Where is Charles Soludo?”, and my answer is that I am still there, only that I have been too busy with extensive international travels to participate in or comment on our national politics and economy. But I occasionally follow events at home. Since the survival and prosperity of Nigeria are at stake, the least some of us (albeit, non-partisan) must do is to engage in public debate. As the elections approach, I owe a duty to share some of my concerns.

In September 2010, I wrote a piece entitled “2011 Elections: Let the Real Debate Begin” and published by Thisday. I understand the Federal Executive Council discussed it, and the Minister of Information rained personal attacks on me during the press briefing. I noted more than six newspaper editorials in support of the issues we raised.

DON’T VOTE FOR JONATHAN, SOYINKA LISTS REASONS

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, declared on Thursday that no one should vote for the continuation of President Goodluck Jonathan’s government, saying that there has been a total failure in leadership.
He said he has sixty reasons not to vote for the Jonathan regime.
“I will not vote and I will not encourage anyone to vote for the continuation of this government, simply because your colleagues numbering over two hundred were kidnapped, “ Soyinka told students at the 2015 edition of Vision of the Child (VOTC), a yearly programme inaugurated in 2012.
He said the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped on 14 April last year were sent on a mission to acquire an education, but ended up being kidnapped.
“And the government of this nation failed to show leadership. So anyone who says after that event that I will vote or cast my vote or encourage anyone to vote for this regime must be living in Sambisa forest,” Soyinka said, referring to a forest in Borno State where the Chibok girls are believed to be held by Boko Haram.

It said less than three per cent of this population has had to be placed outside family or community care.
This is contained in a statement issued by UNICEF’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Mr Manuel Fontaine in New York on Friday.
“Since overcoming their initial fears and misconceptions about Ebola virus, families have been showing incredible support, providing care and protection for children whose parents have died.
“This shows the strength of kinship ties and the extraordinary resilience of communities at a time of great hardship’’, added the statement.

Zimbabwean opposition steps up calls for Mugabe to resign after he falls at airport

mugabe trips ii
ZIMBABWEAN president and African Union (AU) chairman Robert Mugabe recently tripped and fell at the Harare International Airport renewing calls that he is too old to run the affairs of state and should stand down. President Mugabe, 90, has ruled Zimbabwe since it became independent in 1980 and has shunned repeated calls for him to stand down. Defying his critics, President Mugabe took over the AU chairmanship this month at its recent summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. It was on his way back from the summit that he missed a step and hit the canvas while making his way to his Mercedes Benz limousine. Minutes after the pictures were relayed by international media, members of President Mugabe’s party, Zanu PF’s’ communication department launched a campaign defending their leader. Presidential spokesperson George Charamba, said: “Please don’t allow

I’d Rather Resign Than Postpone Elections – Prof. Attahiru Jega

 jega-YNaija-610x336
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega has threatened to rather resign his appointment than postpone the scheduled February general elections. He said nobody’s demand, including that of the National Council of States (NCS), or any other institution, will make INEC to postpone the February general elections as scheduled. The source further said that Jega confided in them that he will appeal even a court order on this issue, and that only a Supreme Court order will make him shift ground. A highly reliable source close to the INEC Chairman who pleaded anonymity told Universal Reporters that Prof. Jega told a group of close

The All Progressives Congress, APC,  has said that in spite of the commendable and patriot decision by the National Council of State that the 2015 general elections must go on as scheduled, proponents of election shift have not given up on their desperation to scuttle the elections.
In a statement, Friday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said, however, that the desperadoes will always fail in their evil machinations, because no power is strong enough to defeat a determined people.
It said the provocative call by the bogus Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly for the postponement of the elections and the arrest of INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega is one of the new antics of the election postponement campaigners.

In the about eight hours judgement read by Justice Ikpejime, the Tribunal dismissed the Omisore’s petition for lacking in merit.
It also held that the petitioners failed to prove most of the allegations raised in their petition before the Tribunal.

Indeed time is now at hand. Ndigbo must once again be reminded of doing the needful. The primary elections of all parties are over with exception to that of Anambra PDP that shall and always be resolved in the court of law. But before this time, that is the election proper, Ndigbo needs to be reminded of the hard fact that 2015 is a very crucial year for Igbo survival. It is of necessity to inform Ndigbo that owing to the precarious nature of things especially as concerns the politics of Nigeria, we do not for any reason need to dare gamble with the forthcoming election especially as regards electing candidates, particularly, candidates of bold conscience.

2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS: HOPE RISES ON APGA CANDIDATES

In one of his many seminal essays on Nigeria, Chinua Achebe poignantly observed that “Nigeria is what it is because its leaders are not what they should be.” Indeed since Nigeria began its current democratic experience, one of the most crucial tests we have had to face is the quest for a responsible and astute leadership – a leadership that represents the best the country has to offer in the management of the affairs of men.

How Uche Ekwunife And Her Convoy Run From Anambra Breaches Of Peace Law

UcheConvoy
A melodrama reminiscent of Nollywood theatrics ensued over the weekend along Onitsha-Awka end of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway by Nawfia, when the political campaign convoy of Mrs. Ekwunife ran for cover to avoid possible arrest for illegal campaign and breach of the peace in Anambra State.
Ekwunife’s convoy which was en-route Awka after campaign stops in near-by towns turned and ran on citing heavy presence of security personnel by the Nawfia axis on the Expressway.

The event which took place along the busy Onitsha-Awka end of the busy Expressway drew the attention of the villagers who suddenly noticed many cars in the Ekwunife convoy making a quick U-turn and running back to Awkuzu while one of the cars carrying Mrs. Ekwunife veered into the near-by village route to avoid detection on citing the blockade of the road by security personnel trying to quell an altercation by some Nawfia residents laying claims to the parcel of land where the burrow pit is located.

When Governor Willie Obiano took over the leadership of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) as the Chairman BoT and National Leader, on December 17 last year, he quoted the Italian Renaissance man, Michelangelo, to his fellow party men and women. In a powerful emotional voice, Obiano said; “the greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.” The tremendous resurgence of APGA since this ambitious statement has since shown that Governor Obiano knew exactly what he was saying.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala And The Missing Trillions (1) By Chukwuma Charles Soludo

I read some of the responses to my article, “Buhari vs Jonathan: Beyond the Election”, and I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the debate. I am glad that the debate has finally taken off. I have decided, for the record, to re-enter the debate if only to set some records straight and hopefully elevate the debate further.  Whom do I respond to? First, let me thank Gov Kayode Fayemi for his very mature and professional response on behalf of the APC. It forms a great basis for deepening the conversation. Pat Utomi, Oby Ezekwesili, Iyabo Obasanjo, and thousands of other patriotic Nigerians have raised the content of the debate. Femi Fani-Kayode made me laugh, as usual. The Gov. Jang faction of the Governors’ Forum played the usual politics, although I know what most of them think privately. Who else? Oh, Peter Obi. Well, since he can’t write and designated Valentine as usual to write for him (who never disputed the NBS statistics that Obi broke world record in the pauperization of Anambra people but instead focused on lies and abuses) I won’t dignify him with a response here. His third class performance in Anambra will be the subject of a comprehensive article later.
