Don’t go on strike, Akande urges labour

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, Chief Ayo Akande, on Sunday, asked labour unions in the country not to embark on any strike to protest the increase in fuel price.

Akande said President Muhammadu Buhari meant well for Nigeria and would do everything possible in ensuring that Nigerians got the desired change they voted for.

He, therefore, appealed to Nigerians to support the government with prayers and be patient.

Akande, in a statement, said although the increase in fuel price was painful, Nigerians would reap its  benefits very soon.

He said, “President Buhari means well for Nigeria.  All we need to do as citizens is to cooperate with the government, support him with prayers and exercise patience. On the fuel price hike, I believe Nigerians are impatient and lack the understanding of the whole issue. This thing should have been done two years ago.

“We should have deregulated the downstream oil sector a long time ago. Very soon, Nigerians will begin to see the effect of that decision. The price would have gone down. The queues would totally disappear and Nigerians would live comfortably. I am very sure that by June 2017, the stability that the government wants would have been achieved.”

While also assessing the performance of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos  State,  Akande urged Lagosians to appreciate the governor’s good gestures by performing their civic responsibilities such as the payment of taxes, levies and compliance with laid down rules and regulations in the state.

“Lagos does not have the challenge that other states are going through right now, that is cash crunch and the inability to pay salaries. But the governor has done a lot in terms of infrastructural development, especially in the areas of road construction and rehabilitation.

“He has also done well in the area of security. Though Lagos has a high Internally Generated Revenue, the governor is trying to balance the infrastructural development of Lagos with the welfare of the people. I believe the people of Lagos will be amazed by what they will see in the next two years,” he said.
