With relative ease, more Nigerian adults and families, including the urban dwellers, can now start up fish farms in order to earn alternative income from the highly lucrative business of fish farming.
Thanks to the partnership between the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and Benuwatts Company Limited to promote modern fish farming through an innovative system that uses mobile fish ponds made from reinforced tarpaulin – instead of concrete structures that have been generally expensive and less efficient.
This was disclosed at the NIPOST Territorial Headquarters in Awka during a courtesy visit on the NIPOST Management led by the Regional Sales Representative of Benuwatts, Ms. Uche Igboanugo.

The Senior Manager of Operations, Mrs. Ngozi Metu, who received the delegation, stated the ability and readiness of NIPOST to ship the innovative fish pond tarpaulin being manufactured by Benuwatts to buyers across all parts of Nigeria and even Africa. This is as she expressed excitement and optimism that Nigerians will harness the affordability and comparative advantages offered by the modern fish farming solution to engage in fish farming for alternative income stream or full time employment.

The Benuwatts delegation commended the reliable services of NIPOST, and expressed resolve to use NIPOST as a default service provider for shipping of its reinforced tarpaulin products.

Nigeria’s burgeoning human population coupled with low private investments in aquaculture has created a large supply deficit of fish and fish products, which is responsible for loss in foreign exchange to the tune of about N125 billion expended annually on the importation of 1.9 million metric tonnes of fish.

Aside this, the World Bank’s Commercial Agriculture Development Project in Nigeria has seen the enhancement of fish smoking techniques, such that smoked fish from Nigeria now meets international standards and can be exported directly to the huge U.S. market.

But enough supply remains the problem, as in the very words of DHL Aviation Commercial Manager for sub-Saharan Africa, Abayomi Adetola, “We’ve been moving around to see how we may get something to fill the flights, but, unfortunately, because we are an importing nation, we are unable to get anything.”

For these reasons, fish farming easily emerges as a very lucrative and top investment choice for inhabitants of a country that is grappling with economic hardship.
The tough but affordable tarpaulin solution from Benuwatts is easily movable and can be set up in temporary indoor and outdoor spaces like garage, garden, backyard or compound spaces, thereby making it suitable for use by tenants and the teaming youth population of Nigeria who lack permanents spaces.
