Scores of Residents and traders of Awka took to
the street in protest against what they term as non installation of transformer
by the Enugu Electricity Commission, EEDC.
The Electricity consumers who spoke through the auspices of
the Awka branch of Anambra state Traders Association, AMATAS women wing ended
their peaceful protest at the the EEDC business office along Ziks Avenue, Awka
.
The protesters who were seen carrying pla cards
with different inscriptions like, "EEDC lift ban on transformers
installation, we are tired of
darkness, install transformers given to
us by our governor ",among others.
They Lamented over the neglect on the part of the
electricity provider not to have
installed electricity transformers provided by the governor of Anambra state Willier
Obiano for over two years.
Speaking to newsmen, the leader of the group Mrs Promise Ezeigwe and her members, lamented that they have been
in darkness for over one and half year,
a situation which was alleged to have crippled the economic activities at the various parts
of Awka that are affected.
They explained that governor Obiano donated
transformers to all the affected parts since the past one year six months, but
none of them has been installed.
Reacting to the allegation, the Communication Officer, Awka office, Mrs
Maureen Onyeonwu, claimed that they were not aware that government donated such
transformers as according to her, government was supposed to give them notice
about the transformers and request for installation.

It would be recalled that the state governor,
Willie Obiano donated over 500 electricity transformers to enhance electricity
supply in major cities in the state.
