Education Sector: Gov Obiano Recommends Total Overhaul

Stakeholders in the Education Sector have been charged to provide a workable plan that will take the sector to greater heights.
Governor Willie Obiano gave this charge during the 2016 Joint Consultative Committee meeting on Education in Awka.
Delegates from the thirty six States of the Federation, and the Federal Capital
Territory, Abuja, are attending the meeting.
The meeting which is taking place at the Professor Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre, with the theme Inclusive Education: Creating Quality

 Earning Opportunities For All: Implications For Concurrency In Education In Nigeria, had Stakeholders in education, including Heads of local governments, Chief Executives of Government  Boards and Parastatals, Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries, Rectors of Polytechnics, Provosts of Colleges of Education, Vice Chancellors of Universities, Military and Paramilitary Personnel, among others in attendance.

Declaring the event open, Governor Obiano represented by his Deputy, Dr Nkem Okeke, regretted that despite the recommendations of the United Nations to Countries to allocate at least twenty six percent of their Gross Domestic Product to education, funding of education in the Country is still very poor, and called for total overhaul of the nation’s education system.  
In a remark, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Anwuka, canvassed for removing of management of education, from concurrent list for optimum results.    

Earlier, the State Commissioner for Education, Professor Kate Omenugha, pointed out that the State remains a reference point in education policies and programmes in the country.
While expressing optimism that the meeting will afford them the opportunity to fashion out more ways of improving the education sector, Professor Omenugha, who enumerated some of the achievements of the Obiano administration in that sector, disclosed that tuition fee is free for students with special needs across the State.          
Drama and cultural displays formed the highpoints of the opening ceremony of the event which will end this Friday.
