The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has called on Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra to take urgent steps at addressing the inadequacy in sports infrastructure in the state .
SWAN in a communiqué issued after its meeting described the situation as unacceptable and regrettable.
The communiqué which was signed by Tony Oji and Chimezie Anaso, Chairman and Secretary also called on the governor to direct proper constitution of the Anambra Sports Development Commission (ASDC) set up last year.
SWAN said the board as presently constituted is not amenable for comprehensive development of sports in the state.
“At the monthly meeting held on July 5 at the NUJ Press Centre, Awka, SWAN, Anambra Chapter reviewed the state of Sports sector in the state and arrived at the following conclusions:
“That the continued lack of functional sporting facilities in Anambra and absence of noticeable attempt at addressing it, is unacceptable and regrettable, we therefore call on Gov. Willie Obiano to take urgent steps towards addressing the situation.
“SWAN calls on Gov. Willie Obiano to order proper constitution of ASDC both in organisational structure and scope to accommodate relevant stakeholders including sports associations.
“ASDC as is presently structured is not amenable to comprehensive sports development in Anambra,” it stated.
The sports writers who commended the efforts of ASDC in promoting sports in Anambra said it was not enough as most sports were languishing in neglect.
They lauded the state continents to national sports competitions held last year for their efforts and urged them to do better in future meets.
“SWAN commends the efforts of ASDC at developing the Anambra sports sector but wish to observe that the commission's activities are largely seen in its monthly ‘Walk for Life' and soccer .
“SWAN therefore calls for activities in other sports including Athletics, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Handball cricket.
“SWAN congratulates Anambra contingents to National Youth Games and National Sports Festival in Ilorin and Abuja respectively in 2018 for their performances and charged them to do more for themselves and for Anambra in future competitions.
