The new Zonal Director, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, Mr Jude Akonam, has called on Nigerians to be wary of their interaction and utilization of Artificial Intelligence, AI.
Mr Akonam made the call while addressing newsmen in Awka, Anambra State, on the theme of the 2024 World Consumer Rights Day, which is "Fair and responsible AI for consumers".
While appealing to Nigerians to embrace the AI technology, the FCCPC South East Zonal Coordinator stressed the need to deploy AI in a manner it will not undermine the interest and rights of all consumers.
He said, "This year's theme is very suitable because of the way AI is increasingly impacting our world.
"In America today, many people have lost their jobs to robots. Even in Nigeria, things we used humans to do before are now being done with different AI products. This leads to job loss".
Mr Akonam appreciated the work of researchers which has continued to make things easier and faster for the people.
"Any information you want now, at the press of a button you get it through chatGPT and other AI products.
"AI was made a subject of discussion this year because of the danger associated with any technological breakthrough like that. Remember, nothing comes for the use of man that doesn't come with abuse.
He emphasized the need to deliberately protect consumers against such downsides of Artificial Intelligence.
So, our duty at FCCPC is to check the abuse of artificial intelligence so that it doesn't go beyond helping mankind to something that causes sadness," he said.
On the occasion of the World Consumer Rights Day, the FCCPC Zonal Coordinator called on Nigerians to read and understand information about any product or service they seek to procure to ensure that it serves their best interest and doesn't violate their rights.
