Anambra Lawmaker Saves School Children Going To Toilet In The Bush From Snakes, Other Rodents

BY RAYMOND OZOJI,  Awka

Anambra lawmaker representing Aguata 2 state constituency in the 8th legislature and House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Health, Hon. Tony Ifedilichukwu Muobike has saved children at Aguluezechukwu Community Secondary School from snakes and other rodents as they go to the bush to defecate due to lack of toilet facilities in the school.

Muobike who disclosed this during his well-attended constituency briefing held at Orton Palace Hotel Ekwulobia last weekend, said he felt for the kids when he visited the school only to discover that the school has no toilet facilities and the children resorted to bush methods to ease themselves when they are pressed irrespective of the dangers inherent in using such unhygienic methods especially as it concerns female students.

Pained by the development, the lawmaker promised the school that he would provide a modern toilet facility therein. Before long, he fulfilled his promise and built a state-of-the-art toilet facility with water system comprising three toilets for males, three toilets for females and two toilets for teachers.

Hence, neither the students or the teachers would be attacked by snakes or other wild animals for using the bushes and forests as toilets because there are none in the school premises.

Muobike also mentioned that he led a high-powered delegation comprising the Speaker of the 8th assembly, the Chief of Staff and some other members of the state assembly to Aguata High School where they found out that the school which was one of the best schools in Anambra State  has become a shadow of itself.

Muobike who told his constituents that the level of infrastructural decay in the school demanded urgent remedial actions, said they discovered during the inspection visit that  part of the school compound is now being used for farming by villagers in the area.

Having seen the deplorable condition of the school, he said government assured him that positive steps would be taken to restore the school back to her glorious status and according to him, plans are already underway for Aguata High School to undergo massive renovations.

The lawmaker said that Umuona his country home had no secondary school but with his influence as a legislator, he has been able to attract a secondary school to Umuona community.

Another very pathetic story the lawmaker recounted during the constituency briefing was the ordeal of a little girl who drowned in her father's compound in Ikenga in 2017 due to excessive flooding in the area.

Muobike whose eyes were red with tears as he told the touching story of the ill-fated little girl, noted that flooding and erosions were major environmental devastations in Aguata Local Government Area.

The lawmaker however gave hope to his constituents saying that flooding and erosion devastations would be frontally tackled as he has laised with his federal counterpart at the Green Chambers to get the federal government to address erosion and flooding menace in the area.

Muobike who told this journalist that nobody compelled him to summon the town hall meeting with his constituents, said apart from his efforts in education, he also attracted construction of Ekwulobia-Oko road and drew government's attention to Igboukwu flood and erosion menace.

The lawmaker said because of the passage of the bill for establishment of private nursing schools into law and subsequent assent by the governor, Apex Nursing school Igboukwu has been approved including School of Nursing Aguata has also been approved.

He said he ensured that Ekwulobia General Hospital and all the Primary Healthcare Centres in the constituency were included amongst the ones government would give priority attention.

The astute lawmaker announced that the issue of power outage in the constituency will be a thing of the past as he has met with the Commissioner for Power and Water Resources and government assured him that 33KVA power line being drawn from Adazi to Umuona will provide permanent solution to electricity problem in the area.
