On Thursday, Prof. Sani Lawan, Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), clarified that he is not affiliated with any political party in the state.
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting where he presented the election guidelines and timetables for the upcoming Local Government elections scheduled for November 30, 2024, Prof. Lawan addressed allegations about his party affiliation.
He stated, “I am not a registered member of any political party, nor do I intend to join one, due to my role as a social critic and comrade.”
Prof. Lawan assured that the commission is committed to conducting a fair election and cautioned political parties against engaging in electoral malpractice. “Election officials are committed to integrity; it is politicians who engage in election rigging,” he said.
The KANSIEC Chairman also announced the fees for election forms: N10 million for Chairmanship candidates and N5 million for Councillorship candidates. Additionally, he specified that Chairmanship candidates must be at least 30 years old, while Councillorship candidates must be at least 25 years old.
