Timber Dealers Urge Governor Sanwo-Olu to Include All Stakeholders

A coalition of timber dealers, comprising the Ifesowapo Timber Contractors Association, Ijaw Timber Contractors Association, Towing Vessels Association of Nigeria, Timber Sawyers Association of Nigeria, and Timber Pullers Association of Nigeria, has called on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ensure comprehensive stakeholder involvement in managing timber operations before proceeding with any plans regarding the potential eviction of the Okobaba Timber Business.

In a statement signed by Mr. Akinte Gabriel, High Chief Cyrus Olopele, Mr. Oshodi Wasiu, Alhaji Taiwo Ahmed Quadri, and Mr. Monday Akuboh, the group expressed concerns over the possible eviction and the current management approach that they believe has excluded key industry stakeholders. They argued that decisions affecting the timber industry should be made collaboratively with all relevant parties.

The statement highlighted that no association has been authorized to exclusively represent the entire timber sector, and criticized the government's lack of inclusivity. The group emphasized that a harmonious working relationship among stakeholders has historically been crucial for the timber business in Lagos.

The Okobaba Timber Business, the largest timber market in West Africa, originated from contractors across various states and has always maintained a respectful and inclusive environment. However, recent government actions have created a divisive and exclusionary atmosphere.

An agreement was previously made to relocate the Okobaba Timber Industry to a new site at Timber Villa in Agbowa/Ikosi/Owu. Despite this, the government has assigned the new site to a single association, disadvantaging others. Additionally, the Towing Vessel Association has reported that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police has instructed the Marine Police to halt the transport of timber from neighboring states, affecting shipments to the Okobaba Timber Market without prior notice.

As a result, many businesses are facing financial losses due to halted shipments and deteriorating timber. The coalition is calling for a general meeting of all stakeholders to address and resolve the ongoing issues in the timber industry.

The group also requests that the government halt all dredging activities and respect the ongoing court proceedings regarding the timber industry. They urge the government to avoid intimidation and force, and instead foster a peaceful and constructive relationship with all stakeholders.
