Indications have emerged that the Federal Government
has formally commenced negotiation with the leadership of the Boko Haram sect
over the abduction of about 270 schoolgirls of Chibok, Borno State.
Daily Trust gathered that President Goodluck Jonathan
today held a secret meeting with some men believed to have links to the
leadership of the sect.
Information Minister Labaran Maku led the
'negotiators' to the president's office where the meeting was held.
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, ordered the deployment of additional troops to the North-East region to strengthen the military force in the fight against insurgency in the region.
The Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, who disclosed this in Abuja, while briefing newsmen on the security challenges in some parts of the country, also confirmed bomb explosion that rocked Terminus Market, yesterday afternoon, in Jos, Plateau State capital.
The
recent call by yoruba leaders, agitating for an autonomous region is not new in
the several calls in the pastl, but later gain momentum when the south west
representatives in the ongoing national conference insist that the incessant
unrest and killings in the northern east region would best be described as
anarchy in disguise and the only option left for the region is a call for
secession, where each region will control both natural and human
resources within its domain.
The surveillance drones which Nigeria bought from Israel years ago that might have been used to hunt for the more than 200 girls held by Islamist rebels, have been left grounded due to poor maintenance, two official sources and the aircraft’s manufacturer said.
A 54-year-old radio
journalist, Pius-Junior Opute ,(a.k. a .OPJ), who was allegedly caught peeing
in a drainage and resisting arrest, on Tuesday appeared before a Tinubu
Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The accused, who lives at
41, Adeba St., Lakowe, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, is facing a two-count charge
of urinating in a drainage and resisting arrest.
The relative peace enjoyed
by residents of Jos, Plateau State capital for some time was shattered,
yesterday, as two bomb explosions ripped through Terminus Market in the city,
killing no fewer than 118 persons and injuring several others . The Police, however,
said that 46 were killed while 45 others were injured.
President Goodluck Ebele
Jonathan strongly condemns the bomb blasts in Jos, Plateau state, today,
describing the perpetrators of this tragic assault on human freedom as cruel
and evil. He has also directed all relevant
agencies to mobilize support and relief efforts in aid of the victims. The
President extends his heartfelt sympathies to the affected families and
persons.
Two big explosions rocked
the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) area inside the Terminus Market
near Murtala Mohammed way, in Jos city.
Eyewitness said the explosions shook the entire area causing major panic in the
area.
The bombs were primed to inflict maximum casualties as they exploded few
minutes apart.
Britain’s Ministry of Defence on Monday said that a spy plane sent to help in the search for the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram Islamists had been grounded en route due to a fault. “A technical fault which has delayed the Sentinel aircraft on its way to Ghana is being investigated and will be solved as soon as possible,” said an MoD statement. “In the meantime the UK military team continues its work on the ground while other surveillance aircraft continue the search for the missing schoolgirls.”
A former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (retd.), has said the person, who was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for a N20m scam, and who claimed to be his adopted son, was not his son. Buhari, a presidential candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 election, said he had no need to adopt any son as God had blessed him with both male and female children. The disclaimer by the former Head of State was contained in a statement by the Chairman of the Buhari Vanguard, Mr. Jasper Azuatalam, on Monday.
