The election in Ekiti has come and gone. Most Nigerians including those on the winning and losing side have both had surprises, pleasant and unpleasant. At the point of penning this, the "winner and losers" already know their fate. The declared winner governor-elect Peter Ayo Fayose has accepted victory with magnanimity and the major loser in the electoral contest, the incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi of the APC has also accepted defeat gallantly and gracefully.
In what appears to be signs of a rift between Gov. Seriake Dickson, and President Jonathan, the Bayelsa Executive Council has resolved to embark on a publicity blitz to deny the allusion that the ongoing projects across the state were being carried out by President Jonathan. Worried by growing concerns by the disclosure that President Jonathan had released in excess of N40 billion to fund most of the ongoing projects, for which the Dickson administration is claiming credit, the state government publicly denied that Jonathan had no hand in the projects.
Nigerians have been called
upon to ensure that the best of hands are ruling them, in order not to
be destroyed by both political and economic corruption. Making the
appeal in Lagos yesterday was the former Federal Capital Territory, FCT,
minister, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, while delivering a lecture on
‘Corruption and the Challenge of Good Governance’ at the national
discourse, organised by The Companion. According to him, the country
is in great danger because corruption stifles good governance, as
resources that should go towards improving public good end up in private
pockets or are unaccounted for.
Barely 24 hours after the governorship candidate of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose ,won the state
election, another governorship candidate of the party in the August 9
election in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has declared that he was
prepared to take over the reign of power in the state.
Despite Governor Kayode
Fayemi’s acceptance of defeat in the June 21 Ekiti gubernatorial poll,
TheCable understands that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is pushing
for Ayo Fayose’s victory to be challenged in court. Fayemi lost the
election to Fayose, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),
by a wide margin and promptly made a concession speech ─ considered
rare for a Nigerian politician. The election was generally seen
to be free and fair ─ although not without
SOME national leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Sunday,
visited former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, at
his Okuku residence, apparently in connection with the August 9
governorship election in the state. The team was led by the new
national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and the
national leader of the party and former governor of Lagos State, Senator
Bola Tinubu, with Osun State governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, also in the
team.
A former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Kalu, has congratulated,
Ekiti State governor-elect, Mr. Ayodele Fayose of the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) in Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
The out going governor
of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Monday, said he would not challenge
the result of the June 21 governorship election in the state.
Fayemi, who made the disclosure when he received the governor-elect, Mr
Ayo Fayose, in his office in Ado Ekiti, said “I will not challenge the
result of the election because I am not desperate to remain in office.
National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),
Sunday, at the Presidential Villa celebrated the party's victory at
the governorship poll in Ekiti State with President Goodluck Jonathan,
just as the president re-emphasised one-man, one-vote. The committee led by PDP national chairman, Adamu Muazu gave kudos to Jonathan for the conduct of the election, which was adjudged free and fair.
