Claims and counter-claims on Monday again rocked the political atmosphere in Osun State.
This followed the claim by the Peoples Democratic Party that the Elections Petitions Tribunal hearing the party’s petition over the outcome of the governorship election that returned Governor Rafu Aregbesola, had declared the PDP candidate, Iyiola Omisore, as the governor elect.
The party said this followed the discovery of uncounted 100,000 votes in favour of Omisore, which invariably led to his having more votes in the election that Aregbesola.
Ever since the attentive world rose to its feet to applaud Governor Willie Obiano’s virtuoso performance in 100 days in office, the dogs of war seem to have been let loose and they are baying for his innocent blood. Obiano and his beautiful wife have become the punching bag of miscreants on social media whose mercantile instincts mark out as cannon fodder in the hands of aggrieved and out-of-favour politicians. Every day, they concoct lies and tasteless falsehoods to nibble away at his soaring popularity among the long suffering people of Anambra State who are beginning to finally see that indeed, Anambra can be better.
Peter Obi’s defection from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did not surprise me. Unlike Bianca, widow of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, I knew the former Anambra State governor was going to take that fateful political step. Every discerning political observer knew that despite Obi’s protestations and despite his vow that he would quit partisan politics any day he left APGA, he had a crush on the PDP. His body language betrayed him. That Obi had the patience to serve out his second term as governor on the platform of APGA was the only surprise. I did not want to comment on his defection until I read Bianca’s interview in the Daily Sun and Obi’s reaction.
A smile spread like a rainbow across her face, flooding her countenance with colour as she danced to the beat of the music. The strident rhythm of Kaycee’s popular hit – Pullover, urged her on. A crowd of excited children joined her in this frenzied dance, their faces beaming in blissful contentment. It was easy to see that her mood was infectious and that the children’s happiness was merely a reflection of her own passion. She was in her element. It could be easily seen that nothing else would have given her as much fulfillment at that moment in time. It was her birthday. And she chose to mark it with handicapped children and the less privileged, dancing and singing gloriously with them at the Governor’s Lodge, a place you would have imagined as inaccessible to physically challenged children.
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of running a government which only benefits his cronies and family members. Atiku accused Jonathan of turning his administration to one of nepotism, presidentialism and ‘clientelism.’ The former VP said this through his representative, Director-General of the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Prof. Babalola Borishade, at a press conference held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The future ambitions of two governors – Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State and Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State – on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have presented the main opposition party with the dilemma of finding a balance between their desire for higher office and keeping the funds flowing from the states that both governors head. While Kwankwaso has indicated his desire to contest for the presidency as the APC candidate, from all indications Amaechi is angling to emerge Major-General Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate should the latter secure the presidential ticket of the party.
Girls who escaped Nigerian terror group Boko Haram have described the physical torture, rape and forced marriage that many endure in their secret forest camps.
Some victims are also forced to take part in attacks and carry ammunition for fighters during battle. Others have been used as ‘bait’ to lure Christian men to their deaths.
The abuse is detailed in a Human Rights Watch report, which includes first-hand accounts from some of the schoolgirls who escaped after April’s Chibok kidnappings.
The kinsmen of Governor Sullivan Chime in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State at the weekend trooped out en masse to receive the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu whom they endorsed to continue his quality services to the people of Enugu West Senatorial zone come 2015.
Senator Ekweremadu who was accompanied by Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stakeholders and supporters to Udi, which is the hometown of Governor Chime for a condolence visit over the demise of their illustrious.
