DEFECTION: JONATHAN, TAMBUWAL RESOLVES FEUD

The political enmity between President Goodluck Jonathan and the speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, following the latter’s defection from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, may have been resolved.
Tambuwal told his fellow lawmakers at plenary yesterday that his defection was because of his political future and the political developments in his home state of Sokoto. But since then, there has been no love lost between the lower chamber of the Legislature led by Tambuwal and the Executive under Jonathan.

Why Jonathan candidature offers stability

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan (R) and Nigerian Vice President Namadi Sambo greet supporters at a ceremony in Abuja on November 11, 2014. Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan on November 11 declared his bid for re-election, vowing to finally defeat Boko Haram whose rise in strength during his first term has threatened the country's sovereignty. The 56-year-old made the announcement to tens of thousands of supporters in the red, white and green of his ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), at a carefully orchestrated ceremony including patriotic music, dancing, prayers and speeches. It was an emphatic “Yes” that the Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, received in the early hours of Thursday, December 11, 2014, from more than the required two-thirds of the delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who had gathered at the Eagle Square Abuja, to ratify his candidature as PDP’s flag bearer in the February 14, 2015 presidential elections.
Free from the adversarial politics and rancorous spirits all too evident across the channel in the opposition party’s convention in Lagos, delegates of the ruling PDP were indeed in convivial mood – with hugs, laughter and backslaps as they voted and confirmed President Jonathan as their presidential candidate in the forthcoming general elections.
Just like all good stories, the matter that started with an overwhelming endorsement of President Jonathan by virtually all the major organs of the PDP as the party’s flag bearer in 2015, ended on a joyous note.

NIMASA vows to rid Nigeria of sea pirates, kidnappers

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, yesterday restated its determination to rid the nation’s maritime space of pirates and kidnappers.
The Director General of the agency, Mr Ziakede Akpobolokemi, stated this during his end-of-the-year news conference in Lagos.
According to him, the agency has taken pro-active steps ahead of pirates within the areas and with a promise to continue to frustrate kidnappers in their evil acts.
He said: “If I tell you in the last one month plus, the number of attacks we have foiled in Lagos area and the number of pirates in our custody, it will be alarming; none of them succeeded.”
“Some of them, we have handed them over to the Navy to help us and working with them and civil defense for prosecution; and some of the vessels are in our custody.

How Corrupt is Nigeria?

anti-corruption
How corrupt is the government of President Goodluck Jonathan? The answer may vary depending on who is interpreting the latest global corruption index from Transparency International.
According to Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2014, Nigeria is up eight places to 136 out of 175 countries ranked by the index.
The government has unsurprisingly interpreted this to mean that Nigeria is “winning the war on corruption under President Goodluck Jonathan’s watch.”
The government has also said in a rather celebratory tone that, “It may not be immediately apparent to those who do not understand the dynamics of applying creative techniques in upturning an age-old habit that has cost this country a lot in terms of financial resources; but to those like the officials in Transparency International knowledgeable in the nuances of fighting corruption, a lot of grounds have been covered.”
