The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday, reiterated its readiness for the forthcoming general elections even as strong pressures were brought on its National Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega by contending forces at the National Council of State, NCS, to shift the polls by six weeks. Jega, who, insisted on holding the election as scheduled was, however, countered by service chiefs present at the meeting who, according to sources, told him that they could not guarantee security for the election. At the end of the meeting, the commission was told to go and conduct its responsibility within its legal framework. The commission is meeting tomorrow to review the developments, sources said.

Indeed
time is now at hand. Ndigbo must once again be reminded of doing the
needful. The primary elections of all parties are over with exception to
that of Anambra PDP that shall and always be resolved in the court of
law. But before this time, that is the election proper, Ndigbo needs to
be reminded of the hard fact that 2015 is a very crucial year for Igbo
survival. It is of necessity to inform Ndigbo that owing to the
precarious nature of things especially as concerns the politics of
Nigeria, we do not for any reason need to dare gamble with the
forthcoming election especially as regards electing candidates,
particularly, candidates of bold conscience.

In
one of his many seminal essays on Nigeria, Chinua Achebe poignantly
observed that “Nigeria is what it is because its leaders are not what
they should be.” Indeed since Nigeria began its current democratic
experience, one of the most crucial tests we have had to face is the
quest for a responsible and astute leadership – a leadership that
represents the best the country has to offer in the management of the
affairs of men.
Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, declared on Thursday that no one should vote for the continuation of President Goodluck Jonathan’s government, saying that there has been a total failure in leadership. He said he has sixty reasons not to vote for the Jonathan regime.
“I will not vote and I will not encourage anyone to vote for the
continuation of this government, simply because your colleagues
numbering over two hundred were kidnapped, ” Soyinka told students at
the 2015 edition of Vision of the Child (VOTC), a yearly programme
inaugurated in 2012.
He said the Chibok girls kidnapped on 14 April of last year were sent
on a mission to acquire an education, but ended up being kidnapped.
“And the government of this nation failed to show leadership. So
anyone who says after that event that I will vote or cast my vote or
encourage anyone to vote for this regime must be living in Sambisa
forest,” Soyinka said, referring to a forest in Borno State where the
Chibok girls are believed to be held by Boko Haram.
The member representing Anaocha, Njikoka/Dunkofia Federal
constituency Honourable Uche Ekwunife, has solicited the support of traditional
rulers to mobilize the electorates to collect their Permanent Voter Cards
(PVC) ahead of february general elections

A
melodrama reminiscent of Nollywood theatrics ensued over the weekend
along Onitsha-Awka end of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway by Nawfia, when
the political campaign convoy of Mrs. Ekwunife ran for cover to avoid
possible arrest for illegal campaign and breach of the peace in Anambra
State.
Ekwunife’s
convoy which was en-route Awka after campaign stops in near-by towns
turned and ran on citing heavy presence of security personnel by the
Nawfia axis on the Expressway.
The
event which took place along the busy Onitsha-Awka end of the busy
Expressway drew the attention of the villagers who suddenly noticed many
cars in the Ekwunife convoy making a quick U-turn and running back to
Awkuzu while one of the cars carrying Mrs. Ekwunife veered into the
near-by village route to avoid detection on citing the blockade of the
road by security personnel trying to quell an altercation by some Nawfia
residents laying claims to the parcel of land where the burrow pit is
located.
