The government of the
United Kingdom yesterday has said the level of corruption in Nigeria
affects it directly and it would take steps to protect the integrity of
its financial system. UK’s Minister of State, Foreign and
Commonwealth, Grant Shapps, who was in Kaduna yesterday to meet with
Governor Nasir El-Rufai, said there would be no impunity on the side of
his government in tackling corruption, promising that it would take
prompt action against anyone who commits criminal offence under UK jurisdiction.
Sen. Bernie Sanders said he would support a proposal to legalize recreational use of marijuana, saying he wanted to reduce the number of people sent to jail for drug use or minor possession.
“I suspect I would vote yes,” Sanders said, when asked how he might vote in an upcoming referendum in Nevada, where Tuesday night’s first Democratic debate was held. “And I would vote yes, because I am seeing in this country too many lives being destroyed over non-violent offenses…We have to think through this war on drugs.”
His main Democratic rival, former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton, was asked a similar question. Clinton was not ready to take a position.
Election petition tribunal sitting in Awka has dismissed the petition of of Dr. Ernest Ndukwe of All Progressive Grand Alliance, against Senator Andy Uba of Anambra South senatorial district on Grounds of not being able to prove the prima facie evidence of the allegation before it.
In a three hour judgment read by the chairman of tribunal , Justice Nayai Aganaba posited that the petitioner could not produce enough evidence to back his claims on points of law.
He said the petitioner (Ernest Ndukwe ) however resulted to adopting technically to adduce their evidences, which electoral act 2010 as amended conditioned the tribunal on matter of technicality which should not be entertained.
Anambra state governor, Mr. Willie Obiano and entourage arrive scene of fatal accident that claimed many lives and injured many at Umuchu area of Anambra state. According to reports, a truck driver lost control of the vehicle after its brake failed and killed many people on Sunday evening at a market in Umuchu town in Anambra State, southeast of Nigeria. The incident happened at a village market called Afor in Ibughubu, Umuchu in Aguata local government at about 5.30 pm.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday arraigned a university professor, Brimmy Olaghere, before Justice U.P Kekemeke of the FCT High Court sitting in Apo, on a two-count charge of obtaining goods and cars by false pretence.
Mr. Olaghere had allegedly defrauded one Okwosu Chinedu and a company, Joyjoe Global Link Limited, of the sum of N56,032,000.
According to the first count, Mr. Olaghere defrauded Mr. Chinedu of goods worth over N20 million in July last year.
A ministerial nominee and spokesman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Monday filed a N500m defamation suit against Chief Olisa Metuh of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
According to Mohammed in his brief filed before the Lagos State High court, Ikeja, Metuh had defamed him in a press release, authored and circulated on September 20, 2015, where according to him was alleged that he (Mohammed) embezzled the funds meant for fencing of an airport in one of the APC-controlled states in the South-West.
Mohammed also claimed that Metuh alleged he (Mohammed) obtained money to supply ambulances to one APC-controlled state in the South-West, which he never did.
Though, the suit, filed Monday is yet to be assigned to any judge.
The Senate has announced that it will be screening 10 ministerial of the 1st batch of 21 ministerial nominees on Tuesday. The ministerial nominees were led into the red chamber by the Chairman of All Progressives Congress, Chief Odigie Oyegun.
Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has said that the first civilian governor of the state, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, died because he was harassed and forced to abandon his medical care abroad.
Mr. Alamieyeseigha died last Saturday at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt.
The state government said in an earlier statement that Mr. Alamieyeseigha died after a long battle with kidney disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Family sources had said that the former governor’s health suddenly deteriorated after the U.K. government requested his extradition to face charges years after Mr. Alamieyeseigha jumped bail and left London where he was arrested over alleged corruption.
The sources said Mr. Alamieyeseigha fled Dubai in the United Arab Emirate where he was receiving medical treatment, to avoid being arrested abroad.
Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday sent the second list of ministerial nominees to Senate President Bukola Saraki. This is coming 12 days after the first list was sent to the lawmakers, who will begin screening of the nominees today.
The second batch of nominees was submitted to the Senate President by the Chief of Staff to the President, Alhaji Abba Kyari accompanied by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, at 4.25pm.

The Department of State Service (DSS), on Monday, paraded two Fulani
herdsmen who abducted a one-time Secretary to the Government of the
Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae, on his farm in Akure, Ondo State,
last month just as the suspected abductors allegedly confessed to have
received N5 million before releasing him.
The suspects, according to Mallam Abdullahi Garba who briefed the press
on behalf of the Service, are Abdullahi Usman (a.k.a Kadri) and
Babawuro Kato.
