The police in Anambra on Sunday confirmed that a gunman killed eight worshippers and injured 18 others in an early morning attack on St. Philip Catholic Church, Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area. The Commissioner of Police, Mr Garba Umar, in Awka said that the remains of the dead had been deposited at Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi. Umar also said that the injured were taken to the hospital. He said that preliminary investigations by the police
revealed that the attack was carried out by a native of the area. “From our findings, it is very clear that the person who carried the attack must be an indigene of the area. “We gathered that worshippers for 6 o’clock Sunday mass at St. Philip Ozobulu were in the service when a gunman dressed in black attire covering his face with a cap entered the church and moved straight to a particular direction and opened fire. “The man after shooting at his targeted victims still went on a shooting spree, killing and wounding other worshippers,’’ he said. As political parties gear up for governorship primaries in preparation for the November 18 poll in Anambra State, candidates may have to contend with the factor of incumbency and zoning. This is because traditional rulers in the state under the aegis of Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council (ASTRC) have thrown their weight behind zoning, insisting that zoning remains the only way to stem the bitter acrimony, stiff competition, violent confusion and waste of funds that trail governorship polls in the state.
Prior to the renewed emphasis on zoning, some political heavyweights in the state had deployed clever electoral maneouvres and strategic plots to defray the power of incumbency, which Governor Willie Obiano enjoys. The single item plot revolves around the machinations within the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), which include dislodging the governor from the party and creating internal fissures to whittle down the cohesion in the party and therefore make it so feeble that it cannot withstand electoral competition from other big contenders, notably All Progressives Congress (APC).
Frontline contender in the November 18, 2017 Anambra governorship election, Chief Osita Chidoka on Monday picked his nomination form to contest the election on the platform of the pan-Igbo United Progressive Party (UPP).
The former Aviation Minister who was accompanied by a large crowd of political associates and supporters including women, youth and professional groups stormed the National Secretariat of the UPP in Abuja where he was received by the National Chairman, Chekwas Okorie and other top party functionaries.
Another Anambra state frontline politician and a business mogul, Chief Donatus Okonkwo has picked the Governorship election nomination form on the platform of the All Progressive Congress APC,
Okpnkwo, who s the Cheif Executive Officer/Managing Director, Tantalizer Fast Food Plx. promised to change the country line of governance by injecting hi creative prowess to provide prosperity to the people of Anambra state .
The need to have a courageous and valiant police force would not be left solely in the hands of male police personnel alone.
Advocates have solicited for improved welfare and working conditions for the women police, as one of the major stakeholders, whose knack to uncover criminal hideouts wouldn’t be swept-under by gender differences.

Not fewer than 100 criminal suspects have been paraded by the Anambra State Police Command for alleged robbery, banditry, child trafficking and cultism criminal activities.
Sequel to increased criminal activities across the state, Police Commissioner Garba Baba Umar warned vehicle owners to stop covering their number plates and avoid using sirens.
The police said the suspects were arrested at Nnewi, Awada in Onitsha, Agulu in Anaocha Local Government Area as well as Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area.
"We know very well that the toad does not run in the daytime for nothing; if it is not after something, then something must be after it. Although Nigeria is not new to agitations of all kinds, the nation has of recent been caught in a cacophony of agitations by different groups and sections of the country. In particular, these agitations have been most pronounced in the South-east, where the activities of various pro-Biafra groups have been most pronounced. There have also been loud and well-meaning voices in the South-east and all over the country strongly canvassing a restructuring of the country.

The time to restructure Nigeria has come, former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida said on Monday as he launched an appeal to Nigerians to draw back from further campaign of hate the like of which he said led to the 30 month civil war. Former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida during prayers to mark his 75th birthday celebration at the Hilltop, Minna, Niger State Noting his own historic linkages across the various divides in the country, the former military president said that there was little discord among Nigerians of different social classes as he urged Nigerians to synergise their different potentials towards building a great nation. Towards restructuring the country, Babangida called for the devolution of more powers from the federal level to the states even as he urged Nigerians to embrace the creation of state police. He said the fear of state governors using state police to run amok was not as strong as the greater benefit that creating state police would do for the nation. While passionately appealing to leaders of the different divides in the country to show more maturity by reining in the younger elements, the former military president observed that war is not a joke anyone should toy with. General Babangida said: Nigeria, my dear country, is not a stranger to crisis, nor is she immune to it. In a profound sense, she can be said to have been created out of crisis, a nation state that will continue to strive to subdue and transcend crises. In over a century of its
