Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, speaks with Ashiwaju Media about the recent flood disaster in the state, the Paris Club refund and the states unsustainable wage bill among other issues
How is your state coping with the recent flood disaster?
Let me seize this opportunity to express our gratitude to all Nigerians, civil society and the media in particular for standing by us during our time of distress occasioned by the unexpected flooding that occurred recently in Benue State. It brought a lot of pain and devastation upon our people but it was a good experience because, for once, we have seen that we are in the hearts of Nigerians based on the responses we got from Mr. President, various corporate organisations, individuals and the Federal Government; we deeply appreciate it. We hope that this support will continue to help us amend the destruction caused by the flooding.
A national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has said restructuring will bring much needed balance to the country.
The former Lagos State governor, however, said he was against the split-up of the country.
Tinubu’s assertion followed repeated pronouncements by President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo that Nigeria’s unity is settled and not open to negotiation.
Tinubu, who was the keynote speaker at the annual dinner of the King’s College Old Boys’ Association, on Saturday, described Nigeria as a nation that had not sufficiently defined its governance.
The APC leader said, “We are like the bewildered couple who has got their marriage licence after a lavish wedding; yet neither of them really understands the meaning of marriage or their roles as husband and wife in it.
“Legally, they are married but functionally, their union is a crippled one. This couple will be at loggerheads until somehow they forge an agreement on what type of home they want and what are their respective duties in making that home come into existence.
The cold war between Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola and his Ondo State counterpart, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), may soon escalate following the attack on the Osun State Commissioner for Regional Integration, Mr. Bola Ilori, in Akure, Ondo State.
Ilori, who is an indigene of Ondo town and a serving commissioner in Osun State, was attacked by some hoodlums in Akure on Thursday during an All Progressives Congress meeting on restructuring.
Reacting to the attack on Ilori, Aregbesola, in a statement issued by his media aide, Mr. Sola Fasure, described the attack as “barbaric,” saying it was an indirect attack on the people of Osun State whom Ilori represented at the forum.
Out-of-favour Super Eagles attacker Obinna Nsofor has said he rejected offers from European clubs to join the South African side Cape Town City.
He has played twice for the club coached by his former team-mate Benni McCarthy since signing a one-year deal.
The 30-year-old returns to Africa after 12 years playing in Europe.
“I had other offers in Europe but this move was the right one for me, it feels great to return home playing again on African soil,” he told BBC Sport.
“But to play football to the fullest of your abilities, you have to be happy.
“So Cape Town City with its ambitions and objectives, as well as Cape Town as a city convinced me and my family to come over here.”
Niger beat Benin to win bronze medal Nigeria’s home-based Eagles Sunday, suffered a 4-1 humiliating loss to Ghana in the final match of the 2017 WAFU Nations Cup. CONTEST…Ghana’s Samuel Safo (centre) contests for the ball with Nigeria’s Rabiu Ali (r) during yesterday’s WAFU Nations Cup final game in Cape Coast. Ghana won 4-1. Playing in front of a capacity crowd at the new Cape Coast Stadium, the home-based Eagles, who had defeated Ghana 2-0 in a group game last Monday, were completely taken apart, shred into pieces, dismantled, offering little in attack to suffer their first and worst loss in the regional tournament hosted by Ghana To say that the coach Salisu Yusuf-trained Nigerian side played like lightweights is an understatement as the Black Stars
relentlessly ran rings round their midfield, comprising Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Afeez Aremu, Rabiu Ali and Peter Eneji, who all looked helpless. From the start of the game, Ghana burst into the action, asking all the questions as the Nigerians retreated into their cocoon, which inadvertently, led to their
Barring an injury or loss of form, Victor Moses is set to hit an impressive Premier League milestone when Chelsea take on Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on November 5, 2017. Victor Moses If the Nigeria international gets some game-time in the next five matches, he would have made 200 appearances in the English top-flight. Moses has played for five different clubs in the Premier League : Chelsea, Wigan Athletic, Liverpool, West Ham United and Stoke City. The former England U17 sensation made his debut in the English top-flight on February 6, 2010, when he replaced Hugo Rodallega in the 83rd minute as Wigan Athletic played out a 1-1 draw with Sunderland at the
THE Abuja Federal High Court order declaring the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB as a terror group and proscribing its activities, yesterday elicited mixed reactions in the polity with some leaders pooh-poohing it and others hailing the move. One of those who backed the proscription yesterday, is Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, who said the move would help restore peace in the South-East geo-political zone in particular and the entire country. However, a host of others, who picked holes in the court order banning IPOB, said the group was not given fair hearing. The ban was sequel to an ex-parte motion filed by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami on September 20, which the Acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Abdul Kafarati, granted same day. On March 2, 2017 the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, turned down the government’s plea to make IPOB an illegal body. In a ruling by Justice Binta Nyako, the court struck-out six of the 11-count criminal charge the Federal Government preferred against the then detained
