What We Expect From Buhari In 2020 —Afenifere, ACF, MASSOB
A cross section of socio-cultural groups in Nigeria has given their expectations of the regime of the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for 2020.
Afenifere, Arewa Consultative Forum and the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, in separate interviews with our correspondent, said the performance of the Buhari regime over the last four and a half years had left a lot to be desired.
Among the areas enumerated for improvement by the Federal Government were the rule of law, Federal Character, education, agriculture and health.
Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, stated that the current regime had been characterised by unmerited appointments and disregard for the rule of law, more of which he said could be expected in 2020.
Odumakin said, “If the past four years have been anything to go by, we expect more nepotism in terms of appointments, concentrating every critical appointment in a section of the country. Don’t forget that he (Buhari) just promised some two weeks ago that he could now afford to be reckless.k
A group, Igbo Presidency Project Movement , has asked Northerners not to truncate the political arrangement that has engendered seamless rotation of Presidency of the country between the North and South .
It said the system was one of the factors that had sustained the country ’ s democracy .
The group’ s National Coordinator , Arinzechukwu Igboeli, stated this at a press conference in Awka, Anambra State on Sunday .
His reaction followed a statement credited to the leader of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Yerima Shettima , that the North would again produce the President of the country in 2023 .
Igboeli described the statement as insulting to the sensibilities of the 365 ethnic groups in the federation .
He said, “ Nations are not held together by force but by a sense of justice , fairness and equity .
“ Thus , it is important for young Nigerians like us who believe in the unity of Nigeria based on fairness and equity to immediately react to statements made by the coordinator of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Yerima Shettima , which clearly called for power to remain in the North after the incumbent President , Major General Muhammadu Buhari( retd .) , would have exhausted his eight -year tenure in 2023 .
“ Such a statement smacks largely of ignorance or contempt of the attempt by those who fought to restore our democracy and preserve the fragile unity of Nigeria by reaching the conventional notion of zoning which encouraged the rotation of the Presidency between the North and South .
“ This trend has been followed almost religiously with the exception of the Goodluck Jonathan era which was brought upon us by the demise of President Umaru Yar’ Adua in office but was immediately corrected in 2015 when these progressive forces brought change .
“ Shettima not only made the call for the Presidency to remain in the North but also in a hubris-like manner dismissed the morally backed agitation of Ndigbo to produce one of its own for the office in 2023 .”
Buhari Restricts Ministers’ Entourage For Overseas Trip To Four

He said, “ On the nature and frequency of travels, all public -funded travels ( local and foreign) , must be strictly for official purposes backed with documentary evidence . In this regard , all foreign travels must be for highly -essential statutory engagements that are beneficial to the interest of the country .
“ Except with the express approval of Mr. President , Ministers , Permanent Secretaries , Chairmen of Extra -Ministerial Departments , Chief Executive Officers and Directors are restricted to not more than two foreign travels in a quarter .
“ Also, when a minister is at the head of an official delegation , the size of such delegation shall not exceed four including the relevant Director , Schedule Officer and one Aide of the Minister . Every other delegation below ministerial level shall be restricted to a maximum of three .
“ For Class of air travels, the President has approved that Ministers , Permanent Secretaries , Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants to the President , Chairmen of Extra -Ministerial Departments and Chief Executive Officers of Parastatals who are entitled , to continue to fly business class , while other categories of public officers are to travel on economy class .
“ Also, travel days will no longer attract payment of Estacode allowances as duration of official trips shall be limited to only the number of days of the event as contained in the supporting documents to qualify for public funding . ”
