Nigeria and her ravaging hunger

By Ejike Anyaduba

Nigeria relishes the moniker - the giant of Africa - which she blazons like an armorial bearing. With enormous resources and a population of about 250 million people (Professor Lumumba, the Kenyan lawyer and activist, thinks she is more than that figure) she can afford to boast about her giant.

Why Aba Electric Ringfence Is Not Affected by National Grid Collapse

The nine local governemnt areas (LGAs) in Abia State serviced by Aba Power were not affected by the latest national grid collpase that occurred around 8 am on Saturday, October 19, an investigation has revealed.

This is because Geometric Power Group, the owner of Aba Power, Nigeria’s 12th electricity distribution firm, generates and distributes electricity to Aba without going through the national transmission network anymore.

Nnaji Calls for Return of Power Purchasing Agreements to Boost Electricity Generation

The former Minister of Power, Professor Bart Nnaji, has called on the Federal Government to resume the signing of power purchase agreements (PPAs) with private sector investors to ramp up Nigeria’s electricity generation.

Nigeria currently has about 13,000-megawatt nameplate capacity but generates only about 5,000MW due to a number of factors, including insufficient natural gas availability for the country’s gas-fired plants, which account for 80% of national grid electricity.

Fresh Insights into the Power Sector

Dr Ronke Adewale-Johnson

“It’s an unfathomable paradox”, ruefully stated the woman sitting next to me at the discussion segment of the three-day Energy Summit at the Landmark Events Centre when the 2024 annual conference started on Tuesday, October 15, “that a country so blessed with brilliant and talented persons could be in the present development morass”. The lady, in her early 30s and from one of the largest commercial law firms in the country, was impressed, like the rest of the considerable audience, at the presentations of executives of different power generation firms in the country. The discussants were Meyen Etukudo, the CEO of Ibom Power; Edu Okeke, CEO of Azura Power Ltd; Oti Ikomi, Vice Chairman & CEO of Proton Energy Africa; and two amazons, Mrs Atinuke Taiwo, Executive Director and General Counsel of Mainstream Solutions Ltd, and Mrs Agatha Nnaji, Group Managing Director of Geometric Power.

Nigeria’s Evolving Federalism and the Search for Sustainable Local Government Administration

The Anambra State House of Assembly passed two progressive legislations pursuant to its powers under the Constitution (Anambra State Economic Planning and Development Law, 2024; and Anambra State Local Government Administration Law, 2024), and I have signed them into law. This has generated commentaries and debates especially in relation to their consistency or inconsistency with the recent Supreme Court judgement and the mantra of “local government autonomy.” My media team, other members of my government as well as well meaning Nigerians have vigorously defended these progressive laws and that should suffice. At this moment in Nigeria, being a state governor is not a fanciful job, especially given the gamut of allegations and innuendoes levelled against governors vis-a-vis local government funds. In the circumstance, any comment by me would be construed as self defence. However, I have a citizen duty to clarify and contribute to the discourse—especially as one who has been extensively involved in the debate and search for a more perfect union.
